The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the latest film to hit theaters in the month of April. The movie was released on April 4th, and as of right now, it has grossed over 830 million dollars worldwide, which is a big achievement for Nintendo and Illumination. Mario fans have reunited once again to watch this beautifully animated film.
The movie consists of the same cast, but also some new voices. Chris Pratt returns to voice the main star, Mario, and Charlie Day also returns to voice Luigi. Anya-Taylor Joy voices Princess Peach, Keegan Michael-key voices Toad, and Jack Black returns to voice Bowser. But the cast can’t remain the same forever. New voices emerge, such as Childish Gambino as Yoshi, which surprised a lot of fans. Some even questioned this casting. Childish Gambino is known for a deep, demanding voice. Comparing that to Yoshi’s high pitched tone, fans would think his voice is edited. Another relevant voice joining the cast is Brie Larson as Rosalina. Rosalina first debuted in Super Mario Galaxy, first released in 2007. Rosalina is a critical character in the film and in the movie. Fans were exceptionally happy that Brie Larson was voicing Rosalina and felt that it was the perfect casting. One more very important casting was Glenn Powell as Star Fox.

Besides the cast and characters, Mario fans were in love with this movie. Supporters really appreciated the star-struck animation that Illumination delivered. Something else that was appreciated by Super Mario fans were the references to the games. A multitude of references to the games were mentioned, like Peach’s Parasol that she owns, the big star that transports Mario to different planets in Super Mario Galaxy and much more. But a majority of film critics did not appreciate this aspect of the film. Unlike fans buzzing over the latest easter eggs and references, critics are looking for a story and some substance. YouTuber and critic, 3C Films, exclaimed that some elements of the story felt chaotic and random. “It’s not bad to service the fans and give those who are supporting your movie what they would like, but I think you should balance that with a stronger story, and a stronger hook emotionally.” (3CFilms) This issue also ties in with the alleged pacing issues. Destiny says that, “Yes the pacing of the movie is pretty bad. But to me it does not make it a bad movie, it’s just something that it struggles with.”
Despite the Super Mario Galaxy Movie lacking in certain areas like pacing, plot, and substance, Mario fans across the world gathered to watch a beautiful and family fun film for everyone to see! YAAHOO!!
