Summer is approaching, and the sports world is heating up as all eyes are on two of the biggest competitions in the world, the NBA Playoffs and the UEFA Champions League knockouts. While the NBA Playoffs are just getting started with the Play-in, the Champions League knockouts have just reached the Semi-Final stage. From game-winning goals on the soccer pitch to clutch late-game shots on the court, both competitions will continue to unfold over the next couple of months, delivering exciting moments until both champions are crowned.
The NBA Playoffs has crowned 7 different teams as champions over the last 7 seasons, from the 2020 Lakers’ infamous bubble ring to the most recent champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. Students around Liberty High School shared who they predict to be the champions for this season. A Junior here at Liberty who plays for the schools Basketball team, Duante Johnson, stated, “Probably the Thunder. Because they won last year without Jared McCain, and then they added him to the team. So I think that just gives them an extra boost to have everybody. But I also think the Spurs…” According to NBA.com, the Thunder and Spurs had the 2 best records in the Western Conference, 64-18 for the Thunder and 62-20 for the Spurs. The Thunder’s newest addition to the team, Jared McCain, was acquired from the 79ers in February for a 2026 first-round pick and 3 second-round picks. Since being traded, he’s contributed “heavily,” as some would say, from the bench, not just with his play, but with his presence in the locker room.

The 82-game NBA regular season has received criticism from some fans for issues such as forcing star players to sit out during many games to avoid injury. Compared to the NBA playoffs, which are widely considered to be one of the best events in all of sports for its competitiveness, memorable moments, and legendary performances. Junior, Kaden Barone-McCarthy, shared what he thinks sets them apart from each other, “The attitude of the players and how they perform, people take it more seriously and go all out, causing potential upsets and showing the team’s true colors.” In the playoffs, every game matters; competing in a best-of-7 game series means a stretch of 2-3 bad games can end their entire season.

The playoffs offer more competitive play as the league’s best players give all their effort compared to the regular season. As many have seen over the years, only the most consistent and healthy teams, according to others, make it far and win it all.
While NBA teams compete for the championship on the court, soccer clubs are competing for the title on the pitch in one of the world’s biggest competitions. The Champions League has delivered plenty of memorable games and controversial moments in previous seasons, such as Barcelona vs Inter Milan, which ended 7-6 across both games after multiple lead changes or Real Madrid vs Manchester City back in 2022, which ended 6-5 across both games when Real Madrid scored 2 last-minute goals to make it 5-5, then scored their 6th in extra time, according to UEFA.com. With this year’s Champions League season reaching its final stages, students shared which match they think has been the best. Senior, Antony Gabriel said, “I’d say the second leg of Bayern vs Real Madrid, even though both teams were almost equally matched, but since Bayern already scored in the first leg, that gave them an advantage over Madrid. Madrid’s defence wasn’t good in the first leg, which got them eliminated.” The first leg, which took place in Madrid, ended 2-1 in Bayern’s favor, giving them a 1-goal lead to take back home, ESPN reports. As soon as the second leg started in Munich, Real Madrid scored to tie it 2-2 in total. The 2 teams continued trading goals until it was 4-4 in total at halftime. No goals were scored during the second half until Real Madrid got a red card, forcing them to play with 1 less player for the rest of the match. Bayern took advantage of the mistake, scoring 2 late goals to win the second leg 4-3, and 6-4 in total, according to BBC.

In recent seasons, based on UEFA.com, the Champions League has introduced a new format, changing from 32 to 36 spots, allowing more clubs the chance to compete in the competition. Another change is switching from a group stage format, where clubs in different groups play 3 teams twice, home and away, to a league phase format, where teams play 8 different teams, 4 home and 4 away, to determine who goes through. The top 8 automatically advance to the round of 16, teams placed 9-24 having to face each other to go to the round of 16, and the rest being eliminated. Junior, Christian Morris shared what he thinks about this change, “Worse because group stages are more convenient and better. The whole table thing is such a hassle.” Many have criticized the new format for issues such as making athletes play too many games, allowing for fatigue and leading to more injuries. Others say that the only reason more games were added was for more TV revenue. On the other hand, some fans have praised the new format, claiming it offers more competition and that more games mean more entertainment. No matter which format the Champions League uses, the competition promises to deliver some of the most competitive soccer ever.
As the UEFA Champions League continues, fans will continue to watch and see which team comes out on top as the tournament progresses to the final 4 stage, where the stakes are at their highest. Both the teams and athletes will play at their best, and with so much talent on display, there will be standout performances. Every match will be filled with high-pressure moments as the best teams in the world battle for the right to lift the Champions League trophy.
