Every March, sports fans face the same challenge: predicting the unpredictable. Between the chaos of the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament, March Madness, and the heated playoff race in the National Hockey League, there is no shortage of excitement or bold predictions. March Madness is kicking off for both the men’s and women’s teams on March 15 with Selection Sunday, when teams learn who will compete for the national championship. At the same time, NHL teams are battling for playoff spots as the regular season nears its end.
Early predictions for the NCAA men’s championship include teams like Duke or Michigan, which recently won their conference tournaments. On the women’s side, UConn is predicted by many to compete for another national championship after winning last year. They are undefeated so far this season, 34-0, and do not seem to be slowing down.

One of the biggest reasons people enjoy March Madness is the tournament’s unpredictability. Lower-seeded teams sometimes defeat top-ranked teams, creating exciting upsets. “People get excited because the games are really close and crazy stuff happens, like lower teams beating the top teams,” commented McBryan Divilla (11). The tournament’s single-elimination format also raises the stakes; it’s win or go home every game.
While college basketball takes center stage in March, hockey fans are also watching the NHL closely as teams push toward the playoffs. Hockey is known for being physically demanding because players must skate quickly and handle constant contact throughout the game. According to Ryan Mortita (11), “There’s also a lot of hitting and contact,” which makes the sport intense to watch and play.

Teamwork is also essential for success in hockey. Players must communicate and work together on offense and defense to win games. Strong teamwork and chemistry often make the difference between good teams and great teams.
Whether it’s the thrilling upsets of March Madness or the intense playoff race in the NHL, March continues to be one of the most exciting months in sports for fans everywhere.
