SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, were at risk as of late due to the government shut down.
October 1st marked the first day of the most recent government shutdown. Shut downs of the government happen when the government isn’t able to get the money they need for operations, which are due to late or denied spending bills. This causes government workers to not get paid, including anything the government covers to go without income, which in this case is SNAP benefits.
While as of now, the government is back up and running, millions were left in the dark about when they might eat their next meal. SNAP doesn’t just help families, it can be their lifeline. Many of the families on SNAP can only afford to eat with the help of food stamps, so without them many, including children, were without answers throughout October and November.
As of right now, SNAP is restored, but that doesn’t mean families are fully back on their feet.
Many families have had to resort to social media or online fundraising to be able to fully feed their families, others, like an ex-Liberty student who wishes to stay anonymous, has had to borrow money from other family members.
“It felt embarrassing” they recall “I thought it was dumb that they took away the money and stuff, for my family to get food”.
As we now enter December, many who relied on SNAP still have their doubts “I feel, like, worried now. What if we have to go asking around again? I don’t want to do all that”.
Even if benefits are back, many are still confused and even still frightened about SNAP. What we do know is that as of right now, benefits are being pushed forward as best they can, and that our country is fighting to keep the program going strong.
