The Vice president debate still remains a pressing and crucial turning point within both Trump’s and Harris’ political campaigns. On October 1, 2024, people around the world tuned in for the highly anticipated Vice Present Debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz.
While both candidates represented opposing sides and attempted to maintain a cordial and respectful relationship, a stark contrast to past debates. Both utilized personal experiences to draw connections between issues and connect with American families.
Topics ranged from gun control to abortion, and the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. When questioned on if Israel should be allowed to fire on Iran, Waltz noted the lack of response from former President Trump at a recent debate. Vance, however, stated, “It is up to Israel what they think they need to do to keep their country safe, and we should support our allies wherever they are when they’re fighting the bad guys”. This led to a discussion on foreign policy regarding weaponry and NATO alliances.
Later, when questioned on the topic of immigration, Vance criticized Harris on this aspect, claiming,
“We have a historic immigration crisis because Kamala Harris started and said that she wanted to undo all of Donald Trump’s border policies”.
Walz passionately rebutted,
“Less than 2% of that wall got built, and Mexico didn’t pay a dime. But here we are again, nine years after he came down that escalator, dehumanizing people”.
As the debate progressed, both candidates grew more aggravated with the other, to the point of microphones being muted due to personal offenses being made. Both continued to comment on widely debated events such as the overturning of Roe v Wade, gun control, and democracy in America as a whole.
