Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth. The most recent solar eclipse took place on Saturday October 14th, 2023 at 9:13 am PDT. Since it is not good to look straight at the sun for a period of time, the solar eclipse can be seen through special-purpose solar filters such as eclipse glasses.
We asked Liberty High School teacher, Mr. Lentsch, if he is going to watch the solar eclipse. He responded, “ I am planning on watching it.” He also added that he watched a solar eclipse in 2021.
Liberty Freshman Ballix stated that the eclipse seemed “pretty cool.” She also mentioned that she saw a video on it .
A solar eclipse can only happen on a New Moon, the Moon’s orbit is tilted to the side 5 degrees to Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Solar eclipse can not be seen from the North and South poles. The geometry of the Sun, Moon, and Earth determines the amount of solar eclipse per year. It is recorded that there can be 2-5 solar eclipses per year.
