Open campus in high school is a fairly common thing with close to 40% of all schools having it. However Liberty High School does not offer it, but should it?
Many students wish to have an open campus for lunches so they can get the food they enjoy rather than the lackluster cafeteria food. When asked about the issue Sienna Maisano, a senior here at Liberty said “If we are able to get to class on time there is no reason for us not to be able to leave.” While in theory everyone would get back to school on time, what if you are late to class this raises more questions for the argument of having an open campus. Sienna interjected “ If you’re late that is on you and there should be punishment, for example maybe you get a detention or maybe you cannot leave for a week, you know something along those lines.” Nevaeh Chavarria, another senior at Liberty believes that instead of it being a right for students it can be a privilege.
Most students seem to agree that an open campus is what’s best for the student body but what do the staff and the parents think? April Godbe, a teacher at Liberty, is against the idea of it, “ We cannot open the campus because if something happens to a student we are liable, so it is better to have them all in one centralized place rather than letting them roam freely. While safety is a valid concern do the parents agree that it is such a safety issue to let students leave the school. Margo Malik, a parent of a Liberty student, seems to agree with the staff and the school. “I am giving my kid to the school entrusting them with the most important thing in my life, I want them safe at all times and if having a closed campus is how the school feels it needs to be done then that is how it needs to be done.”
Liberty high school is a closed campus and it does not seem like it will change anytime soon. The students and the staff of Liberty seem to be at a crossroads on the issue. So should Liberty open its campus?
