On January 3rd, 2024, a man in his 30’s, named Deobra Redden, attacked a judge in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mary Kay Holthus was the judge who was assaulted in the incident.
That day, it seemed to be a regular case hearing for “Attempted battery with substantial bodily harm.” Redden then apologized to Judge Mary for his action and assured to not do it again. Judge Mary then “ignored” his apologies and stated that his charge of battery with substantial bodily harm would put him in prison. That is when Redden became angry, cursing at Judge Mary, running to the podium to jump and attack her.
Many people who watched the video of Redden and the judge reacted mostly the same. Here at liberty, we had a few students who had something to say about the incident. A senior named Hannah Brinker, her thoughts of the video was, “that it’s illegal, I wouldn’t recommend it . It was funny to watch but I felt bad for the judge since she got hurt. I don’t know how he got over the booth.”
Juliana Bahar, a teacher at Liberty, thoughts on whether he was right or wrong were:
“100%, he was wrong and I know he was suffering from mental issues but that excuse only lasts so long till it’s a crutch and should seek mental help. If you have diagnosed mental help issues why didn’t you go get help. All his offenses were violent offenses against women and he lived up to that.”
Deobra’s response for the incident “I was just having a bad day?” Lahar Jacob Manaloto answered, “People can break under pressure but you shouldn’t dive at a judge.” Juliana’s thoughts on his charge of attempted murder, “She did crack her head and was bleeding which means she could’ve died so that judgment seems fair.”
In the end of the attack, the man had gone back into the courtroom and was surrounded by police officers. He did have a face covering for safe measurement in case he does anything again. He was then faced with attempted murder. And now facing up to 4 years in prison and his bail money is up to $54,000.
There is video proof of this happening that has been very popular on social media. You would be able to view it if you type in “Man Attack Judge,” on any social media platform.
