The weather outside has not been delightful for many of those affected by the arctic blast. People around the US have been experiencing piercing, cold weather. arctic blasts occur when the polar vortex weaken it splits and sends frigid air southwards.
NBC News stated, “More than 140 million people have been placed under wind chill warnings. Authorities are warning people to stay indoors and travel with caution.” Most states in the US have reached subzero temperatures, leading to some schools being closed due to how dangerous it has been outside.
People have also died due to the harsh winds and severe snow storms. Cases of hypothermia are also on the rise. The majority of flights departing from the US have been canceled and most people have been snowed-in. Videos of cars underneath inches of snow with their owners trying their hardest to shovel them out have gone viral on multiple platforms such as Tiktok and Instagram.
Most states received over 3 inches of snow and others as high as 6! This arctic blast has stretched all throughout the US affecting states such as: Oregon, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, and many more. All of these states have experienced life-threatening severe wind/snow storms.
More than about half a dozen states announced school closures due to the arctic blast, while some carried on as normal. Most of the snow turned into ice over the weekend and made it even more dangerous to go outside. Roads and highways are slick and considered extremely unsafe to drive on.
The weather is slowly calming down for some states, yet the freezing temperatures remain. Over the weekend some people still attended football games in person, shoveling the stadium snow with their bodies to find their seats. While in Iowa, voters tried their best to resist the weather in order to vote in the state’s Republican caucuses.
So, how has the weather changed here in Henderson, Nevada? Some students at Liberty High School have opinions about it. Dannin is a freshman at Liberty and he states:
“Vegas weather is bipolar and if he could he would definitely leave Las vegas because of the weather.”
Audrina, another freshman student at Liberty High school, says she wishes it wasn’t as cold as it is now but she would rather be cold than hot. Keira also said she would rather be cold than hot, although the weather affects her mood she feels as if it was hot it would affect her mood more than ever.” Most of the students at liberty are enjoying the cooler weather in Vegas.
Overall, there has been a great deal of damage with the colder weather. Deaths, sickness, and more serious incidents. Nevada didn’t get much of the snow, but it was still colder than it had been in a while! These colder temperatures are sign to stay warm and safe inside.
