On October 19th, the local community of Halifax in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia were sent into an uproar after a young woman was found dead in a Walmart that Saturday.
Gursimran Kaur had a bright future ahead of her when her life was sadly cut short. She came to Canada from India looking for a new life, working at the Halifax Walmart with her mother. Everyone who knew her only had great things to say about the 19-year old.
Kaur was a member of the Maritime Sikh Society, a society for people of the Sikh religion. Both them and Kaur’s mother are looking for answers.
Early into Kaur’s shift, no one could reach her. This worried her mother, as Kaur never had a history of turning her phone off, especially not during shifts. This made her mother start to become concerned, which later made her become suspicious of her death. Along with her mother, the Maritime Sikh Society also had questions left unaswered.
But it’s not just them, many around the country are not so sure that this death was accidental. Even as suspicions arise, there is not yet any proof of foul play.
“It sounded set up, ‘cause when I saw the videos the oven doesn’t lock.” Says Renee, a 10th grader.
This is a shared sentiment amongst students, as Benjamin, a freshman, shared “You can’t do this on accident, You can open it on the inside”
While nothing is confirmed, what is fact is how the ovens work. What many students have brought up is how multiple employees of the grocery chain have showed how the walk-in ovens work. Employees have shown that not only are the ovens not self closing, but some either don’t have a latch to lock it, and some even have a button to open the doors once inside. Though it is important to keep in mind that employees say the ovens used in each location are not all the same model, and nothing about the one in the Halifax store has come to light.
As of right now, the Halifax Walmart where the tragedy had occurred remains closed until the near future, as the company has yet to comment on when they plan to reopen the store. While the store is closed, it’s set to have its oven removed. This change was not influenced by the incident, but a part of Walmart’s remodeling program.
