M-pox, formerly Monkey-pox, made headlines in global news after being declared a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” on August 14, 2024.
While the origin of M-pox is unknown, the disease itself has existed for several decades until it began its resurgence, sparking panic across news and social media platforms.
The Clade II strand, the strand that caused the new outbreak, has caused the most alarm, more than 99.9% survive (CDC). This greatly contrasts the much more fatal Clade I, while rare, Clade I has claimed more than 10% of those who contracted it and is more prominent in Central Africa.
M-pox is spread due to close or direct contact with humans or animals who are already carrying the disease, unlike the airborne COVID-19 virus.
