Ever hear of “The Cell Block Tango” or “Funny Honey?” These are just two songs in the play Chicago, and lucky for us our theater department is bringing Chicago to Liberty.
Opening night for the play was Last Friday, April 12 with closing night being last Saturday, April 14. Sadly there are no longer any showings, with the play being finished. But those who were able to see the show were amazed to see the phenomenal thespian art that the cast and the effort that set designers and choreographers put into the show.
The Show follows Roxie Hart in her struggle to “prove her innocence” for the murder of Fred Casely, her fling, whom she killed when he tried to walk out on her. Later when she goes to prison, she meets characters like Velma Kelly, Matron Mama Morton, and Billy Flynn.
Nehamia Hayes, an 11th grader who played Billy Flynn, says he had an amazing time portraying the corrupt lawyer fond of money,
“Billy Flynn is definitely my favorite role I’ve ever played, with his songs being my favorite part.”
With many of the theater kids being seniors and Ms. Chadwick’s last play before she retires, there was a lot of emotion and pressure riding on this play. That didn’t stop them from putting on a great performance as closing night, they were jammed packed with a full house. Kadaj Johnson, an 11th grader who was a part of the ensemble mentioned,” Closing night was amazing, there was a full house that went back to the classrooms.” With the play coming to an heartbreaking end, cue the exit music.
