Crawling out from the Fallout

“Fallout”, The Series Review

The world famous post-nuclear role playing game series now has a series streaming on Amazon. Set 9 years after the events of “Fallout 4”, and 200 years after a nuclear war, the series follows a vault dweller by the name of “Lucy”, played by Ella Purnell, as she ventures through the irradiated wasteland of a post-nuclear California in search of her missing father.

As the series unfolds, she gets roped into conflict with a 200 year old bounty hunter known as “The Ghoul”, played by Walton Goggins; as well as “Maximus”, played by Aaron Clifton Moten, a disgraced squire for the Brotherhood of Steel.

“Fallout” does an excellent job satirizing and commentating on capitalism without it being too on the nose. The set design was incredible, it looked like it was straight out of the games. The writers definitely had respect for the source material. They made the show as a way for people to enjoy it whether they are fans of the original or people just getting into the series.

“Fallout” is as bleak as it is funny with dark comedy we’ve come to expect from the series. While action isn’t really the main focus, when it does happen, they do an excellent job with the choreography and special effects (both CGI and practical).  Fans especially like the fact that the power armor suits are real and not CGI.

However, some people don’t like how the overarching story was handled, they are even saying that the series was ruined in order for the newer games to make sense. We won’t really know until season 2, which hasn’t been confirmed yet but is to be expected.

Overall, “Fallout” is one of the best video game adaptations since “The Last of Us”, and  viewers expect to see more done with the series in the future.
