A Netflix original movie, American Son, directed by Kenny Leon is a drama film based on a play. The film was released on November 1st, 2019.

This movie stars Kerry Washington as Kendra Ellis-Connor, Steven Pasquale as Scott Connor, and Jeremy Jordan as Detective Larkin.

After a heated argument between Kendra and her son Jamal, the son suddenly goes missing. The movie involves an interracial alienated couple (Kendra and Scott Connor), that come from two different worlds, who reunite in a Florida police station to find their missing teenage son.

American Son is set almost entirely in a police station, creating tension between Kendra and Detective Larkin. This began making it even harder for the detective to cooperate with Jamal’s mother about his case and the lack of empathy towards his mother.

American Son brings up conversations about the dynamic of raising a interracial child and how they are looked upon from society along with discussions about the injustice among youth of color today.
