The 10s has come to a close and now we usher in the 20s, welcomingly. It’s crazy to think how just within this past decade, there are kids that have completely finished their academics (high school and higher education) and are making their way into the workplace, and possibly even into motherhood and fatherhood.
As a society, the decade before last saw a lot. Devastating downfalls of the decade for the country that come to mind include the financial crisis of 2007-2008 and 9/11. However, a lot of good memories have come out of the decade as well.
To begin the 10s, a seed was planted. That seed being one of Apple’s biggest hits; the iPad – one of many revolutionary smart tech products that would come out of the company.
In 2011, internet outrage over Rebecca Black’s infamous song and music video, Friday, would take over the web. Also that year, the grand royal wedding between Prince and Catherine Middleton had took place.
In 2012, along the same lines of Friday, the Gangnam Style music video became the most watched video ever accompanied by a now iconic dance move, that mimicked horse riding.
Funnily, enough in that same year, mass hysteria went over the end of the world. Many were convinced that our doomsday would’ve been December 21st of that year. Considering that we’ve made it to the 20s? That theory clearly didn’t hold much ground.
2013 saw another dance trend – this time one that would involve a whole lot of ostentatious surprise public dancing, the Harlem Shake. Many would go onto make and share their own videos doing the trend. Similarly, What Does the Fox Say, also made its break.
By summer of 2014, the internet was flooded with Ice Bucket challenge videos by both the common people and beloved celebrities. With a good cause (raising awareness and research for ALS) they were able to raise $115 million.
This heart warming act of the internet coming together for ALS would see an end by February 2015 in which the whole world seemingly caught themselves in a heated debate over the color of a funky dress.
Also, in 2015, the US would make monumental history, on June 26th, in the legalization of same-sex marriage all over the nation. We have the landmark court case, Obergefell v. Hodges, to thank for this.
2016, brought death to the painfully long meme of Leonardo DiCaprio as he finally received his Oscar. Another death, much more sadder (and funnier?), would spark both grief and inspiration for meme culture – Harambe, a gorilla that had passed away after falling into an enclosure pit. And the world for at least a month straight would go crazy over Pokemon Go.
2017 started off with a phenomenal demonstration known as the Women’s March, millions would attend in support of many rights and equality. In the months following, the world became enthralled by fidget spinners – it would become the hottest selling toy of the year.
2018 started off with a false missile warning in Hawaii that had everyone questioning the reliability of the government. It also included another royal wedding – of which was between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
To finish off the decade, the world got their first glimpse of a black hole – that image in April being the first of the astronomical anomaly
The 10s was a wild ride that seemingly flew by and now we are met with the 20s and its bound to have just the same amount of, if not more, craziness.
