What is the Minimum F Policy?
The grading system changes the usual 100 percent and instead set 50 percent as the minimum grade. Its original purpose was to show a reflection on how kids are actually doing in school. However, as of August of 2023, the policy is no longer. So why change it now?
The district believes that this adjustment will provide students with more opportunities to demonstrate their academic achievement. The goal is to ensure that students’ grades accurately reflect their knowledge and skills while minimizing the impact of non-academic factors. They say it helps students succeed, and helps students at least try to do their best. Opponents of the policy have argued that it lowers standards for students and places to much emphasis on “Summative assessments.”
““I think its a good thing.” ”
How do students feel about this?
Some students say this is a good idea because it shows how much time and hard work students are genuinely putting into their assignments. Supporters of the Minimum F say it helps students motivate them to at least try and do their best. Others don’t share the same opinion. Here’s how our friends at liberty feel:
““They should bring the minimum F back. people are struggling without it. Athlete players struggle and the grade checks make them unable to play.” – Jah Waldrop ”
“I think the new minimum F rule change is a bad change and it doesn’t work well with the grading of summative and formatives.” – Diego Acosta
How does this affect athletes?
Athletes have to work hard and be on top of their game. This means they have to work extra hard for tests/assignments. Having a low grade as an athlete can determine whether they will be able to participate in games or not. This can also affect their teammates in the games. Pressure is then pushed on to athletes because they don’t want to let down their team and coach. On the other hand, this can be good. It pushes them to work harder and keep up their grades in order to continue being in the games.
