With January flying by and February approaching, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. This romance-filled holiday is widely known to have people everywhere, from America to South Korea, exchanging cards, chocolate, flowers, and stuffed animals as tokens of love.
Valentine’s Day originated from a Catholic holiday called St. Valentine’s Day, named after Saint Valentine, who would hand out paper hearts to people. Valentine’s Day is celebrated by gifting presents such as cards and candies.
Symbols of love, like hearts and flowers, are also popular and distributed during Valentine’s Day. However, while Valentine’s Day may seem like a cheerful holiday, some individuals think it may not be as great as advertised.
Evan Williams, an 11th-grade student at Liberty, says, “It’s a bit overrated, but you know, I can see the point in it.” One of Liberty’s English teachers, Mr. Depew, takes a similar stand on this by saying, “I think that it is overrated because no one knows what Valentine’s Day is all about. You don’t even know who Valentine was and it’s just an excuse to sell cards and make people feel left out because they don’t get anything.”
Freshman Morgan Morada, however, is in favor of Valentine’s Day. She says, “I do not think that Valentine’s Day is overrated. I think it is a good holiday for couples to celebrate [with] each other.” 11th grader Olive Corvino agrees saying, “I think it’s a cute holiday [where] people can share their love for others.”
Whether you think that Valentine’s Day is a nice holiday to share your love for the people around you or you think that the holiday is overrated, hopefully, you learned more about other people’s opinions on Valentine’s Day from this article.
