Did you know that the Ukraine and Russian war is still happening! As of , near the Ukrainian and Russian border they are still fighting. Why are they still fighting? Well it’s because Russia views Ukraine as a part of Russia. And this war started back in February 2014. But in February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine. Darell Jones, a student at LIberty High school, was asked how he feels when he sees news coverage about the war? “Its pretty sad because this has been going on for a long time.”
Back in 2014 when Russia started it, Russia annexed Crimea (peninsula in Eastern Europe). Crimea was a part of Ukraine when Russia illegally annexed Crimea. The main reason why Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine was so Russia can have access to the Black Sea. This was important because Crimea is a critical naval asset and control of Crimea gives Russia a strategic advantage by allowing it to project power into the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
Darell Jones was also asked if he thinks peace talks are possible right now. He said, “No, because the war has been going on for so long.”
This war has affected so many Ukrainians, since they are forced to relocate and possibly move out of the country.
