Clad in Band-Ts and ripped jeans, emo and grunge music fans have flocked to the annual When We Were Young music festival. With bands such as My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, MayDay Parade, and SimplePlan all performing, the event draws music fans of all ages to the Las Vegas Festival Grounds from October 19-October 20th.
With the festival being open to all ages, the event has been highly anticipated and well-received. However, the price of general admissions often intimidates those eager to attend. Starting at a fee of $325 and going as high as $650 for VIP the ability to attend has become more exclusive. In addition to the cost of tickets, some have expressed concern regarding the time of year the festival is held.
Generally, Las Vegas is still subject to high temperatures in early to mid-October, this has led some to question how ideal this timing is.
“I think that’s a great time, it’s spooky season…I feel like that’s when the alternative community gets together and unite,”
argued 11th grader Aliyah Chandra.
Amongst this debate, there has been concern expressed over the safety young fans who plan on attending When We Were Young. Although the lack of age restriction allows for more music lovers to experience new artist, it has raised the risk of exposing the younger generation to unsafe practices. Chandra has advised that it is best to, “go with a friend, you’ll never know who you’ll meet…have a ride, make sure to cover your drink, and have a lot of fun.”
Overall the buzz and excitement of When We Were Young is far from gone and will only climb as the date draws closer. Despite the controversy that may intimidate some from going to see their favorite artist, the festival will remain a Las Vegas staple and beacon of unity to many in the alternative community.
